Kida Jadi (also spelled Keeda Jadi, "insect-herb") is the Himalayan caterpillar fungus Ophiocordyceps sinensis. A parasitic fungus infects a ghost-moth caterpillar underground, mummifies it, and in spring sprouts a slender stalk above the soil โ€” hence the Tibetan name Yartsa Gunbu, "winter-worm, summer-grass."
It earned the nickname "Himalayan Viagra" for its centuries-old reputation as a vitality and libido tonic, and "Himalayan Gold" because top-grade specimens can sell for more than their weight in gold.
Sinensis is the wild Himalayan caterpillar fungus โ€” rare, expensive and mostly wild-harvested. Militaris is a related species that can be cultivated in a lab on a nutrient substrate; it is sustainable, affordable and often higher in the active compound cordycepin.
Cordycepin (3โ€ฒ-deoxyadenosine), adenosine, cordycepic acid (D-mannitol), polysaccharides, beta-glucans and ergosterol are among the key studied compounds.
Whole pieces are traditionally simmered in water, milk or soup as a decoction, or ground into powder and added to warm milk, tea, coffee or smoothies. Extract capsules offer a convenient measured dose. A common traditional daily amount is roughly 1โ€“3 grams of whole cordyceps, or as directed for extracts.
Many people take it in the morning for daytime energy. It can be taken daily; consistency over several weeks is usually more noticeable than a single dose.
